very excited to share a new project that's a bit different than my usual fare! i'm dipping my toes back into academia through the video essay format i love so dearly. after all, i may be an artist first and foremost, but there is nothing in the world that can keep from devouring media theory!
this particular video essay was a collaboration between myself and Dr. Barbara Jane Brickman, who was my mentor in undergrad. she has been my closest academic advisor for many years now, and she writes the kinds of books i could only dream of writing. this video essay was born from her brilliant mind and media analysis. she wrote the essay itself and provided the voice-over. i just edited it all together with her guiding hand!
we're both very proud of this and psyched to share our campy lesbian academia with the world! LESBIANS BEHAVING BADLY examines the lasting legacy of lesbian camp, lesploitation, and new queer cinema through the lens of three recent films. Dr. Brickman argues that this new wave of weird, queer, and silly films is built on a long legacy of lesbian filmmaking while also "flipping the script" on audience expectations for lesbian narratives. featuring clips from 58 films (plus a handful of TV shows and other assorted media) this video essay is a love letter to lesbian cinema!
